Phu Phra
Bat Historical Park is situated in
the district of Ban Pheu, Udon Thani
province. The name of this park comes
from the believes that Lord Buddha
had his foot imprinted here on this
hill. This particular site offers
beautiful sceneries of forests covering
the sandstone mountain with erosion
in MESOZOIC CRETACEOUS due to thaw
of glaciers some 180 millions years
ago. This place was the habitat of
pre-historic populations living in
caverns and under rock formations.
Evidences had been found under then
form of rock paintings describing
animals, persons, handprints, etc.
Between the 9th and 11th centuries
Buddhism and local believes had developed
the Dvaravati Culture. Many evidences
on settlement of this population can
be seen such as rock cutting to created
worship areas surrounding stones or
rock carving of Buddha images.
This park covers the entire area
of the Phra Phutthabat Bua Bok temple
and is around 1,200 acres. Nature
lovers may take time to discover the
wonderful flora of the forest especially
in September to November. Many trails
have been traced offering 30 minutes
to 2 hours hikes.
