Sukhothai,
the “Dawn of Happiness” first
capital of Thailand was established in 1238
by two Thai Chieftains, Po Khun Po Muang and
Po Khun Bang Klang Tao. Sukhothai, soon after
its foundation, has expanded quickly its influence
and power in all directions. Today, the evocative
ruins of Sukhothai show a certain material
prosperity and an artistic richness. This
old kingdom is remembered today for its Buddhism
art and architecture. It was in 1283 that
king Ramkhamhaeng created Thai script. He
then ordered in 1292 stone engraving telling
his history and the history of his kingdom.
Nowadays the magnificence of this post kingdom
is classified “world heritage”
by UNESCO.

| The Sukhothai Historical Park. Located
at 12 km from the city, this park contains
many sites. The most visited are: |

Wat Mahathat |
| This temple is the largest of Sukhothai.
It was used as a royal chapel and is
situated west behind the Royal Palace.
Among all the buildings in the temple,
there were 209 pagodas, 10 Viharns,
8 mondops, 1 Ubosot and 4 ponds. The
most remarkable structure is the lotus-bud
shape main chedi flanked with 2 standing
Buddha images at left and right. |

Wat Sra
Sri |
| This temple is placed on a small island
in the middle of a pond. The main chedi
is in Singhalese style. At its feet
stands a beautiful Walking Buddha Image. |

The Ramkhamhaeng
National Museum. |
| This newly renovated museum displays
many artifacts and collections of art
objects unearthed in Sukhothai and nearby
provinces. The museum is opened daily
from 09.00 to 16.00 o’clock. |

Wat Sri
Chum |
Situated northwest outside of the
city wall, Wat Sri Chum host an impressive
14 meters high Buddha Image place in
a colossal building with 3 meters large
walls covered with a wooden roof with
ceramic tiles.
At the left of the entrance is an opening
and a stairway leading to the height
of the head of the head of the Buddha
image. Inside were found 50 engravings
with inscriptions relating the history
of the Buddha.
At the right of the entrance, is an
underground passage joining the road
to Sri Satchanalai, the satellite city
of Sukhothai.
